Do the .exe files work?

*cough* me *cough* grumble yes/no. Fedora core will most likely need you to install drivers for your wireless, video card, etc. Ubuntu might do it all for you. no. exe files are retarded and I never open ones I didn't compile or have a source too (I see you get a lot of porn viruses hehe). To run a file, you first have to make sure it's an executable: "ls -l filename". If you don't see any x's (-rwxr-xr-x) then do this: "<sudo> chmod a+x filename" sudo added if you aren't logged in as root. To run the file, do this "./filename" I take it you mean DISTRO, not version. If you're a complete newbie and just want to test out linux, I suggest ubuntu (GNOME) or kubuntu (KDE). I'm sure you can download LIVE CDs of those so you can test them out before you install. I'm not giving you any links, they're very easy to find in their own websites. You know how to boot from CD right? ;-) Why not have windows AND linux? Just install BOOT GRUB and it will create a boot loader for you. If you don't want linux anymore then you'll have to install the windows boot loader again (removing linux will remove the loader and then you'll just be stuck). Not all of them are free. Red Hat and Debian aren't free. Debian has got to be the best distro to come out (if not gentoo) but you're in luck, Ubuntu and Kubuntu are based off Debian and use the same packaging system. So I recomend you use Either ubuntu and kubuntu on a first try. Eventually you'll learn to do EVERYTHING in the SHELL (command prompt for you windows newbies). They have a great community too if you have any questions (I bet you will). Right now I'm using nUbuntu (network ubuntu <liveCD I ripped into an install and have as an OS now. I comes with nice tools to haxor systems with ease>. nUbuntu isn't supported by ubuntu and it's VERY VERY light. and if you ask me for a linux virus scanner, Ima slap you so hard your jaw will fall on New Mehico!

Although I used to work with Unix and SunOS, I'm not really up on Linux but Just in case you didn't get the gist of this what CS is saying, within the shell (Command Prompt window) you can look at the attributes of each file. This will tell you such things as if that file is (r)ead only, '(w)riteable', E(x)ecutable. So for example you could write a script file (similar to a batch file) and then set it using the chmod command to be executable so it can be run.
Hope this helps
Kind regards
Monty
